Congrats to Johnnes Liem for successfully defending his PhD thesis and for presenting (virtually) our Eurovis paper 'Structure and Empathy in Visual Data Storytelling: Evaluating their Influence on Attitude'. Congrats also to Fatemeh Rajabiyazdi who presented (virtually) our GI paper 'Exploring the Design of Patient-Generated Data Visualizations', to Bon Adriel Aseniero for getting our paper 'Activity River: Visualizing Planned and Logged Personal Activities for Reflection' accepted at AVI 2020, and to Jorin Weatherston for publishing our Late Breaking Work at CHI entitled 'Visualizing Unquantifiable Uncertainty in Drug Checking Test Results'.

One more IEEE VIS conference! This year, UViz is represented with two co-authored InfoVis papers: What is Interaction for Data Visualization? led by Evanthia Dimara; and Investigating Direct Manipulation of Graphical Encodings as a Method for User Interaction led by Bahador Saket and with Samuel Huron and Alex Endert. Jorin Weatherston will also present his poster on 'Visualizing Unquantifiable Uncertainty in Drug Checking Test Results', in collaboration with Peggy Storey. Jorin, Andrea Castaneda and Jimmy Lai will be attending VIS for the first time, and for the first time UVic will co-sponsor the publicly acclaimed and award-winning West Coast Party.

Five grad students joined the UViz research group. Andrea Castaneda Bueno (MSc), Jimmy Lai (MSc), Maybins Lengwe (PhD, with Jens Weber), and Mona Malik (MSc) are starting at UVic. Jan Hombeck is also joining us as a visiting Masters student from Koblenz, Germany (with Kai Lawonn).

My co-authors presented two papers at VIS this year: Tanja Blascheck presented the TVCG paper Exploration Strategies for Discovery of Interactivity in Visualizations; and Mathieu Le Goc presented the InfoVis paper Dynamic Composite Data Physicalization Using Wheeled Micro-Robots. I presented an Annotated Portfolio at the Vis Arts Program called Cycles and (A)Symmetry | Exploring the Design of Shareable Personal Visualizations. I also presented the second iteration of the related InfoVis poster: The Symmetry of My Life II. Mathieu Le Goc further presented our workshop paper on Embedded Personal Physicalizations; Johannes Liem presented both a demo at the Vis Arts Program and a poster that was awarded the InfoVis Best Poster Award on using GeoBlobs to visualize WWI hand-written diaries. Finally, Fateme Rajabiyazdi presented the InfoVis poster 'Personal Patient-Generated Data Visualizations for Diabetes Patients', and Aidan Slingsby the InfoVis poster 'Characterising Farms by the Movement of Animals Through Them'.

I will be on the Infovis PC for VIS 2018 in Berlin for the third consecutive year. I will also be on the 2018 Information+ Conference PC this year - this is just the second edition of the conference, and it will be held right before VIS in Postdam, which is only 25 minutes away from Berlin according to Google maps.

I co-authored 3 infovis papers at VIS 2017: Jagoda Walny presented Active Reading of Visualizations; Philipp Koytek presented MyBrush: Brushing and Linking with Personal Agency; and I presented Assessing the Graphical Perception of Time and Speed on 2D+Time Trajectories. I also co-authored 2 CG&A articles that were presented at VIS: Romain Vuillemot presented Sports Tournament Predictions Using Direct Manipulation and I presented Using Gap Charts to Visualize the Temporal Evolution of Ranks and Scores. Finally, I also presented a personal, autobiographical visualization in the form of an infovis poster, entitled The Symmetry of My Life: An Autobiographical Visualization.

This year at VIS '16 in Baltimore, Mona Hosseinkhani Loorak presented the paper Exploring the Possibilities of Embedding Heterogeneous Data Attributes in Familiar Visualizations; I co-organized the workshop on Logging Interactions and Logs Visualization; Bon Adriel Aseniero presented the honorable mention awarded Infovis poster Fireflies: Biomimicry-Inspired InfoVis for Exploring Public Opinion about an Infectious Disease and Richard Pusch presented the poster SDCurve.js: A JavaScript Library for Interactive Subdivision Curves; also, at the VIS Arts Program, Bon Adriel Aseniero had a demo of Fireflies and Sebastian Lay exhibited Slicing the Aurora.
